Icon Tray is a utility that hides rarely used icons in the system tray. Most tray icons have the options to remove themselves from the tray icons. However, some don’t. It is a waste or precious screen real estate to host these icons in the tray, therefore Icon Tray offers you the ability to hide these icons. The program also can change the order of taskbar windows. Some users have lots of windows open and therefore cannot see them all. Icon Tray can sort the order of these open windows for you in the task bar so the most often used one will always be visible. For those of us have PCs that keep waking up from stand by or sleep mode for no reason, use the feature ‘Force the PC to sleep’ if it is waken up by unexpected events such as USB devices or LAN. I developed this functionality because my PC keeps waking up for no reason.
Windows automatically hides many icons in the notification area to free up space on your taskbar. To see all your notification area icons, click the up arrow to the left of your notification area icons.
You can quickly customize whether an icon appears on your taskbar or this tray by dragging and dropping it between the two areas.
On Windows 10, you can access more detailed setting by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting “Settings”
This takes you straight to the Settings > Personalization > Taskbar screen.
Located on the right side of the taskbar, the system tray, correctly called the Notification area, has been a part of Windows for over 20 years. It kept on improving since it was first introduced with Windows 95, providing easy access to system functions, notifications, and applications. The Windows 10 system tray is more customizable than ever before, as you get to configure which system and apps icons are shown in it. Whether you want to hide the volume icon, keep a particular icon always visible in the Notification area, or see nothing but the clock on your taskbar, this tutorial shows you how to do it:An area on the right side of the Taskbar on the Windows interface used to display the status of various functions, such as speaker volume and modem transmission. Applications also insert icons on the System Tray to give you a quick entrance into either the application itself or some auxiliary function. If you disable an application icon in the System Tray by right clicking it and selecting a Disable or Exit option, you are only eliminating it for this session. When you start up Windows again, it will reappear.
While the Windows taskbar is located at the bottom right corner in most versions of the OS, it is located on the top right side of the screen for Linux, Mac OS, and Android systems.
What icons are located on the system tray?
Icons often installed in the system tray include the volume control for sound, antivirus software, scanner software, a channel viewer, player and a system resources indicator.
When more icons are installed in the system tray than can fit in the space allotted, the system tray becomes horizontally scrollable or expandable.
To interact with a program in the system tray, select an icon with the mouse and double-click or right-click the icon. When minimizing the program after using it, it shrinks back into the system tray instead of into the main part of the taskbar.
What makes a system tray icon unique is that — when installed — it can have a customized message appear when the mouse is hovering over it; the menu that appears when users right-click it can be customized, and the action that occurs when they double-click it can also be customized.
For example, the double-click action for Windows Explorer could be to launch — start or open a dialog window for — the program. Still, the double-click action for a desktop icon could be to “View desktop,” simply remove the active windows and show the underlying desktop.
